Newsletter ‒ September 2016

boursiersDear friends,

During the month of September, many brothers have joined our community. Brother Amir Jajé, OP (Iraq) has a Ph. D. in Islamic studies and is a specialist of Shiism. Brothers Luke Barder, OP (United States), Paul Akpomie, OP (Nigeria), Pierre-Marie Niang, OP (Senegal) and Taufiq Younis, OP (Pakistan) have all arrived for five years to study Arabic and Islamic Studies. They join Brother Sunil Tirkey, OP (India) who started this 5-year program last year. Brother Mateus Domingues Da Silva, OP (Brazil) is working on his Ph. D. thesis in the Muslim philosophy.  We also have a post-doctoral trainee in Muslim philosophy: Eric van Lit (Netherlands).

In the face of political, cultural, humanitarian, and religious drama that cross our world, it is urgent to be formed in a serious way, particularly in the human sciences: history, philosophy, theology, sociology, economy, politics, psychology, linguistics, literature… which are particularly deficient in the Arab world.

Lectures

From September 8‒10, Jean Druel, OP participated in a conference entitled “Foundations of Arabic Linguistics 4: The Evolution of Theory: 8th−14th century AD”, which was organized by the University of Genoa (Italy).

From September 21‒29, Adrien Candiard, OP gave a series of lectures in France regarding his book Understanding Islam (Flammarion, 2016).

Scholars’ House

We had the pleasure to welcome at the Scholars’ House during the month of September Mr. Amine Brahimi, PhD student from Mc Gill University (Montreal) and Mr. Ahmad Abd al-Rahim, independent scholar.
